"post traumatic slave syndrome"

It takes a sociology professor to sink to this level of lunacy:

A Portland lawyer says suffering by African Americans at the hands of slave owners is to blame in the death of a 2-year-old Beaverton boy.
Randall Vogt is offering the untested theory, called post traumatic slave syndrome, in his defense of Isaac Cortez Bynum, who is charged with murder by abuse in the June 30 death of his son, Ryshawn Lamar Bynum. Vogt says he will argue — “in a general way” — that masters beat slaves, so Bynum was justified in beating his son.

The slave theory is the work of Joy DeGruy-Leary, an assistant professor in the Portland State University Graduate School of Social Work.

Because African Americans as a class never got a chance to heal and today still face racism, oppression and societal inequality, they suffer from multigenerational trauma, says DeGruy-Leary, who is African American. Self-destructive, violent or aggressive behavior often results, she says.

    What century does that lawyer live in? His defendent would have to be over one hundred thirty years old, in order to have be a slave in this country. Unless of course someone broke the law. Every one who has a decent American history education knows that the 13’th amendment outlawed slavery. If he was a slave in any state in the union, during the last century, that means that someone else also needs to be put on trial! If he was not, if one of his ancestors was a slave, than how can he have post traumactic slave syndrome, even assuming such a thing exists?

    I cannot believe this theroy, post tramatic slave syndrome, as a defense for murder? I hope that this
    is not accepted. Slavery ended in 1865, I do not believe that anyone is still suffering from slavery
    over 130 years ago. Would it be acceptable for post tramatic slave ownership syndrome? I think most
    people in their late 30’s up were subjected to a ‘whuppin” was normal, but broken bones were not a part
    of it. I have a hard time believing that this child received head injuries, and broken ribs from
    playing helicopter? A childs bones are pliable and a child that has so many injuries is a victim of
    child abuse NOT POST TRAMATIC SLAVE SYNDROME.

    Most of those enslaved africans in my eyes loved their children. He should have use this ptss.I believe ptsscan be or is real if somebody is listening.IT SEEMS INCONCEIVABLE THAT FOR 200 YRS. SLAVESHIPS CARRIED CARGO OF SLAVES.

    It is clear that no one who has posted here knows anything about Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome. Before you trash the theory at least try to understand it first. If you can’t do that, at least have the decency to keep quiet about it. Remember that we could all stand to learn a little more and to increase our sensitivity to alternative perspectives.

    Dee is right… how can you insult something so badly without knowing a thing about it?? Dr. Leary makes many very valid points in her research. Because of such a horrid past, the U.S. is still suffering from segration financially, residentially, and socially. Yet people still believe that slavery has little effect on the social order of our country today. I don’t see how that’s valid. It has a Major effect!! With a past so traumatizing as the black people in the U.S. have had, 150 years is not a lot of time. Yes we have made major progress, but we still have a tremendous amount of progress left to make. You should open your minds a little or you will forever remain ignorant. Thank you.

    I am sure that Post Tramatic Slave Syndrome is absolutely real. The question, to me, is whether or not it is a valid defense for a crime. Child abuse is real, I don’t believe that a it is a valid defense; Shell shock is real, I don’t believe it is a valid defense. Same with Post Tramatic Slave Syndrome.

    I’ve been to Dr. Leary’s lecture and she’s excellent. If you haven’t read her book or listened to her lecture, you are embarrassing yourself by making ignorant comments here. Many of you don’t realize that racism is still lodged in the structure of our society that it permeates the working of the economy, politics, educational and legal constitutions of the U.S. Also, a great many people do not know the magnitude of slavery inflicted on African-Americans. White Americans, their awareness of their own privileged racial status is very limited. So when people of color call attention to the way they’re treated or to racial inequality, white Americans see them as asking for special privileges. It’s not ok for African-Americans to talk about the legacy of slavery but it’s perfectly ok for Spielberg to talk about the Holocaust over and over and over! Why?

    PTSS is very real but not for a defence in this child abuse situation.Africans born in the amerikkkas are still catching hell here &even with a blk.pres..Anyone who can’t see ptss is real is hardcore racist & or a devil spirit.In this country the only people who can complain are so called jews & homo sexuals. The mere fact of Blk. self hatred proves this.Hate for your hair,skin color,as well as hate for each other.If slavery is over why do Blacks have to pay money to remove their name given to them by the slavemasters& change to an original Afrikan name.No other group of people would tolorate what Black people go thru to this very day.Willy Lynch said his slave making method would last for years &many generations.
