I am glad that the Berlin Zoo has intervened to save the life of Knut. We keep animals alive in zoos all over the world and should not allow one to die just because his mother ignored him. It is no great humiliation to be raised by another species. I believe that being raised by humans for only one generation will not change the basic nature of the animal. And being a household pet is certainly safer for many types of animals than living in the wild. In the future it may be that the only animals left on the land will be pets because of population booms and it behooves animals that legislation limiting pet ownership be trashed because without pet owners, there may eventually be no animal of that species left. Better alive, than only a memory. Plus pet ownership now, benefits animals by giving people a personal connnection to animals that makes them desire better conditions for animals all over the world. If you eliminate the personal connection that pets provide, then there is no reason to desire preservation of habitat or species. Consider pets ambassadors for all animals to humanity and accord them gratitude for helping make people more caring towards animals and their wild homes.
